How to Get Married at the Marin County Civic Center: A Complete Guide

At the intersection of mid-century design and meaningful simplicity, the Marin County Civic Center offers one of the most unique places to get married in the Bay Area. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, its soft pink walls, arched hallways, and striking architecture are the backdrop to countless intimate “I dos.”

If you're considering getting married at the Civic Center, here's everything you need to know to make it official.

1. Apply for Your Marriage License

Before you can get married, you’ll need a marriage license—and both of you must apply in person. Head to the County Clerk’s Office (Room 234) at the Civic Center with a valid photo ID like a driver’s license or passport.

There are two types of licenses available:

  • Public License: Requires one or two witnesses and becomes a public record.

  • Confidential License: No witnesses required, but you must be living together. This license is not public and can only be accessed by the couple.

💡 Pro tip: Decide on your married name (if you plan to change it) when applying. You won’t be able to change it later without a court order.

2. Schedule Your Ceremony

Civil ceremonies at the Civic Center take place Tuesdays through Thursdays at:

  • 10:00 a.m.

  • 11:00 a.m.

  • 1:00 p.m.

  • 2:00 p.m.

The fee is $56, and it’s best to book your slot as soon as you know your date—these appointments fill quickly!

3. Day-of Details

Arrive about 30 minutes early to check in, finish paperwork, and get everything squared away.

You’ll have two main options for where to hold your ceremony:

  • Indoors in the Clerk’s Office

  • Outdoors in the garden/pool area, which offers a more open-air and picturesque setting

The officiants are kind and flexible, and you’re welcome to bring guests, take photos afterward, and enjoy the setting for a bit—many couples stick around to soak in the moment and explore the grounds.

4. Want a Loved One to Officiate?

You can ask a friend or family member to perform the ceremony by having them deputized for the day. It’s a simple process:

  • They must be 18+

  • Apply in person at the Clerk’s Office

  • Bring the marriage license

  • Pay a $60 fee

Otherwise, a Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages will perform the ceremony.

5. After the Ceremony

Your officiant will submit your marriage license for you, and you’ll be officially married!

If you’d like a certified copy of your marriage certificate, you can request it online or in person (for $17 each).

Why Couples Love the Civic Center

Aside from the simplicity of the process, the setting is what makes this location so memorable. The Civic Center is not your average courthouse—it’s a work of art. Whether you’re getting married under the soaring blue dome, in the sun-drenched gardens, or along the terrazzo walkways, there’s beauty in every direction.

Planning Tips

  • Photographer-Friendly: This venue is a dream to photograph. The lines, light, and architecture lend themselves to artistic imagery that feels both timeless and modern.

  • Keep it Small: The Civic Center is best suited for elopements and intimate ceremonies with a few guests.

  • Plan a Celebration After: Head to brunch, grab cocktails in San Rafael, or make a day trip out of your celebration in Marin.
